I get to meet all sorts of interesting people from all walks of life. As a bonus my input helps them to stay living at home and independently for as long as possible. Plus I get paid!

From the outset I have been given the training and support I needed to do my job. And they have been understanding about any limitations I might have. No one expects me to be as physically able and energetic as my younger colleagues.

I had been working in hospitality, but when Coronavirus appeared I was furloughed. When I went back it just wasn’t the same so I decided to change my career.

I chose social care as I loved the sound of supporting people to be independent in their own homes. I chose New Dawn from a leaflet through my door; and I liked what I saw.

To be honest, I wish I’d moved earlier. Every day is different and I now feel I’m part of a team.

The early mornings and bad weather are all forgotten when I get to clients and see the smile on their face…and know I’m making a difference to their lives.

Doing my Care Certificate really boosted my confidence and I hope to soon start my level 2 in health and social care.

There are many benefits to my job, especially the financial security and having a secure job in very uncertain times. Although the job can be physically and emotionally tiring, it is so rewarding. I love my job.

In 2014 I was in college, studying hairdressing. I needed a job to pay for a car and transport. My sister works for New Dawn Care Agency (NDCA) and suggested I tried working in care. In all honesty, I didn’t think it would be for me.

I started with shadow shifts. I was very quiet and shy and felt like I had no idea what I was doing; my shadowing was for 2 weeks. NDCA’s management and other Carers gave me amazing support; and I found I really enjoyed the work – it soon wasn’t feeling like a job. So I left hairdressing college and became a full time Carer.

I didn’t believe I would be able to cope with challenging clients or challenging situations, but with the help of the NDCA management team and the Carers believing in me; my confidence in being a Carer has sky rocketed.

With the support of the company I completed my  Levels 2 and 3 NVQ in Health & Social Care.

In February 2020 I was appointed as one of NDCA’s Senior Carers. I feel supported by the management within my new role in the company. I’ve been shown they believe in me and because of this I believe in myself and feel more confident.

The clients have always made me feel welcome and they let me know I’ve made a difference in their lives; this is why I work for NDCA, I’m making an impact and it is the most rewarding feeling in the world.

Why did I choose New Dawn Care Agency (NDCA)?

When I first wanted to get into care, I had no experience. I found NDCA as I live local to them and what I had learned is that NDCA provide you with training on the job. All the qualifications I have gained, have been through NDCA.

I started working for NDCA in December 2011, I received my mandatory training and shadowing and then proceeded on my own with support from the management team. During this time, I have started at 7am, finished at 10pm, done night shifts, worked with challenging clients, taken part in live in care, palliative care, comforted clients/family/team members …and have loved every aspect of it.

I had been with NDCA for a couple of years when I was approached about becoming rota manager, this was based on my ability to help cover sickness within the rota when I was already out on the ground. From this position I then became Deputy Manager. Which shows that even with no care experience, there is always potential for growth within NDCA, within your own career by moving up the ladder. We encourage personal development with all staff and make it a great focus point during discussion to help staff move forward on their own paths. I am proof of that.

You do not always have to believe in yourself if others believe in you; it’s a learning curve professionally and personally. I’m much more confident in myself; and in my position as deputy manager in the last 2.5 years. I am proud to work at NDCA and I know that the reputation we have built, has all been down to hard work and determination.

I have learnt a lot since starting my care career within NDCA. We pride ourselves on providing the best care for existing/new clients, as well as continual support for team members. We have a very ‘open-door’ policy, great teamwork and communication.

I’ve always said that I would only ever work in the management team if I were still able to carry out the care side of things, I feel that you can only discuss, comment on care aspects and advise the staff on clients, routines etc if you have experience in what you are talking about. I wear NDCA’s Senior’s uniform when doing care calls.

I have been with NDCA for more than a third of my life and it has been the securest; and most empowering, emotive, and educational time yet. I look forward to growing my future with them.

Stephanie Jones- Deputy Manager

I had previously worked in the care sector with another agency; but decided after my maternity leave that I needed a change. I enquired about NDCA via family friends and other people I knew who had worked here. I decided to bite the bullet and go for it as their reviews were excellent. The interview process was straight-forward and I was delighted to be offered the position as a care assistant. I started working for New Dawn in April 2016.

I had to do training, before I started out in the community. It was both informative and beneficial and helped me to extend my knowledge. I decided to under-take the dementia and end of life training as well, as it’s something I felt I needed to do in order to be able to give 110% to our clients. I’ve been involved in end of life care packages; done 7am starts, finished at 10pm; dealt with GP’s, District Nurses, Paramedics.

I always felt when I had a child, I might be treated differently due to not doing 7am starts every day and not being able to work every evening but here at New Dawn I am treated exactly the same as every other employee.

In January 2020 two senior carer positions became available within the company. Advertised internally and externally, it was made clear that the position would not be office based entirely; rather it would be care calls, carrying out assessments on new clients and conducting reviews also.

I decided to apply, to further my career with New Dawn and I felt that I could be an asset to my colleagues and the clients. Pleased to say, at the end of February, I was offered the position.

In March 2020 we began our induction period. We are now conducting assessments, carrying out reviews, in contact with other professionals e.g. doctors, nurses, hospitals. And we’re looking forward to working on the online rota system to enable us to undertake on-call in the evenings or weekends.

I feel my time with New Dawn has been empowering, informative and has given me an insight to life that I’d never experienced. I have no regrets coming to this agency and look forward to furthering my career and future with them.

I have worked for NDC for the past 10 years now, part time and enjoy every moment. It is rewarding in many ways…to be able to give my time to enable a person to remain in their own home for as long as possible is so important and satisfying to me.

Plus the care team work well together, managment are very approachable and NDC is a great company to work for. And the money is a added bonus!
